Humans Out Of Control – The Majick (2023)

When you watch those ridiculous reality shows like The Only Way Is Essex or Married At First Sight, you could rightfully think they are humans out of control. Think again, that is edited chaos; the UK-based fivesome Humans Out Of Control is the real deal. Mad as a bag of frogs, Nick Marrs (vocals), Mark Hung (lead guitar), Mark Remmington (guitar), Adam Hoxby (bass) and Ken Johnson (drums) bind their passion for music in tight, hard-hitting rock melodies.

Long-time high school and college friends, Humans Out Of Control (HooC) began as a band of buddies; however, life soon took hold and the group split to pursue the normal things in life – university, full-time jobs, etc. Fortunately, fate brought them together as the kick-ass quintet and, well, they became humans out of control in name and character. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The Majick’.

Following their debut single ‘Creep’, HooC bring us another dose of hard rock meets metal with shimmers of blues in ‘The Majick’. A nostalgic drag to the days of 70s/80s rock, a hint of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath exists in the groups’ tunes; however, a contemporary hard rock kick makes HooC retro but refreshingly new. Produced and recorded with Wayne Lennox (Ellie Golding, Coldplay, and Rolling Stones), ‘The Majick’ is a higgledy-piggledy mix of pounding drums, relentless guitars and Marrs’ obscure vocals slithering through the middle. Yet, while listening to the single is a bumpy ride through a kaleidoscopic tunnel, the arrangement is cohesive and sophisticated with a soothing harmony – well, as soothing as a metal-y, hard rock-y, punk-influenced tune can be. Its mellifluous quality is all-consuming while the distorted insanity is really a bunch of humans out of control.

One aspect I find particularly interesting is how ‘The Majick’ is mature and elegant but retains the chaos of a live session. It’s like the rehearsed magic show with the magician so cool, calm, and serene but with a quiver of madness glinting in his eye. Seriously, think about it, if you stick an assistant in a box of knives you must be a little crazy. The band’s Twitter account describes the lads as “5 middle-aged male hairy smelly ballet dancers from Essex who are also in a metal band” – need we say more?

In addition to the single, HooC released an official music video for ‘The Majick’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel. Please note: this video uses effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.
