Human Renegade – i wrote this song because the thought of seeing you kiss him makes me sick (2024)

We’re finally in the throes of the fifth wave of emo and with bands like Human Renegade, I’m confident it’s going to be as exhilarating as the ones that came before. Their sound draws on everything I love about the genre, from explosive guitars to melodically aggressive vocals. With the new single ‘i wrote this song because the thought of seeing you kiss him makes me sick’, frontman Alister Scott bears his soul, exploring the pain of a breakup and what comes after. I love how they have nailed the pumping guitars, as good as anyone who has come before them in a style elder statesmen of the genre, Rites of Spring, would be proud of.

The vocals hark back to the bands I grew up listening to such as Hell is for Heroes, which is music to my ears as no one has come close, until now. This track would not have been out of place blurring out of speakers in any of the venues I frequented during the third wave of emo back in the early 2000s, which was the golden age of the genre.

After listening to ‘i wrote this song because the thought of seeing you kiss him makes me sick’, I had to delve into Human Renegade’s back catalogue on Spotify as they’ve reawakened the emo kid in me and I’m so glad I did. There is so much more to enjoy with tracks such as the aptly named ’emo’ and ‘Girl Who Cried Wolf’ tapping into all the best elements of the music that shaped my taste all those years ago.

Mainstays on the Glasgow music scene, so if you’re around those parts you can catch them at The Flying Duck on the 12th of April as part of the Reaction Music Showcase. If like me, you aren’t around there, let’s hope that they set out on a wider UK tour because I for one will be there!
