Holding Out – Virtue (2022)

Known for their energetic live performances, UK-based band Holding Out has the ability to ensnare a person’s senses and send them on an intoxicating sonic journey. Formed in 2016 by frontman Ellis Paul (vocals and guitar) but settling on their final line-up in 2018 with Tomm Money (vocals and bass) and Harrison Spry (drums), Holding Out is no newbie to the UK rock music scene. Holding a torch for the underground scene, the trio often play grassroots venues; however, they have shown an ability to play for larger crowds supporting Tiny Moving Parts, The Bottom Line and various other artists. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Virtue’.

Understanding the significance of a DIY approach to production, Holding Out is a self-recorded and produced band with strong individuality. The thing is, while their melodies are profound and intriguing, it is their lyricism that pushes boundaries. Unafraid to cover subjects that may be considered provocative, such as performative activism, the lads can be tons of whimsical fun but with a serious message woven through the songs.

Following their well-received track ‘Teeth’, ‘Virtue’ is a hard-hitting punk rock song that whips your head around from the first second. Unlike ‘Teeth’, the lads show a hardier, rawer and rougher side to their personality in this song highlighting their versatility as artists. Like I said, ‘Virtue’ really turns your head effortlessly melding pounding drums with distorted guitars. Interestingly enough, while all of the instrumentation blends seamlessly, each instrument has a prominent, defined position making its mark on the arrangement.

From powerful drums to scorching guitars slathered with gruff vocals, ‘Virtue’ seems to have a palpable grittiness in the song. I cannot wait for the next offering from Holding Out.
