His Father’s Voice – The Blues (2024)

Emerging from the underground music scene of Limerick City, Irish foursome His Father’s Voice makes a stand with their intriguing rush of sound. With a nostalgic drag to 1980s post-punk, the band linger with a synth-driven rush of cinematic new wave vibes. In other words, they catch you in a haze of kaleidoscopic fog and push you along with a profound theme bound in the tune. This is my introduction to His Father’s Voice, but the group has an international presence from global radio stations to blogs and playlists. Reaching far beyond their Irish borders, His Father’s Voice gives one more inch to experimental post-punk.

Following the well-received singles ‘Arm’s Length’ and ‘Forgot To Feed’, ‘The Blues’ is a bold shout of eclectic sonic experimentalism rushing against post-punk conventionalism. The softer side of new wave runs through in a somewhat soothing synthy vibe; however, hard-hitting punk obscurity bops and weaves in an entirely off-kilter melody. Brash and bold but with a hidden vulnerability lingering through the confident crash, ‘The Blues’ is inimitable.

One aspect I find intriguing about ‘The Blues’ is the ebb-and-flow of sound and emotion. As I mentioned, the brash boldness hits you between the eyes while a soft underbelly whispers through the haunting vocals. Crashing darkness flushed with smooth light, an odd balance exists instead of a complete collision. This is particularly interesting as it captures the profound intimacy of the theme: the effects of capitalism and diverse communities. The band explains:

“… leaning into being dark and oppressive but still powered with resistance. The song fixates on how uncanny props are within corporate hospitality spaces and how they’re used to draw customers in. It’s incredibly uncomfortable how alluring they are despite being obvious imitations, and how successfully they distract from communities that once existed before profit built over them…”
