Hillary Capps – Nobody Told Me (2021)

When Hillary Capps released her single ‘I Didn’t Know’, she was looking for connection and solidarity in a trying time. The poignant emotion hit from the single was heavy and hit in a different way to her latest release ‘Nobody Told Me’. While a break-up song, this vulnerable and rage-fuelled track is different from what you might imagine.

Drawing on her experience of a break-up following a long-term relationship, she decided to leave hormonal birth control behind. This decision spiralled into a list of medical issues and the feeling of being dismissed, disrespected and betrayed by her healthcare provider. While touching on the end of the relationship, this single is at the core an anthem of modern feminists and a connection for women who have felt the same.

‘Nobody Told Me’ opens with Capps vulnerable vocals. The vulnerability of her performance is edged in betrayal and the sadness of feeling sidelined by people who should be there to help. The lyrics are interesting as they perfectly cover both the feeling of a breakup and the dismissal of medical issues. This all-encompassing feeling allows anyone listening to the track to feel a connection with the emotions of the song. The light touch of her voice is soothing while hitting out at pain others can cause without meaning to.

Beneath her vocals is a delicate melody of soft swelling tones. The vulnerability of her vocals is picked up by the tender tones of light instrumentation. The pulses that enter after the first verse only bolster the emotive power of the vocals while retaining the tenderness of the opening. It is a masterful single that swirls around your chest and tugs on your heartstrings through the relatability of each element. As the single comes to a close, there is a rise in the music that leads to a glimmer of hope and a moving beat.

Hillary Capps turns pain, dismissal and upset into the tender, vulnerable and touching single ‘Nobody Told Me’. The single swirls with a vulnerability that everyone can relate to. The lyrics have a touch of ambiguity that allows every listener to connect with the emotions and link them to an experience they have had.
