Highasakite – Mother (2022)

With their single ‘Mother’, Highasakite is ringing in the main themes of their upcoming fifth album. Covering the themes of life and death, and renewal and destruction, they draw you in with a stark depiction of motherhood. Abandoning any rose-tinted lenses, they bring a desperate situation to our ears while dealing with a mother who is not a gentle and caring presence.

While the single lures you in with slick and laid-back RnB tones, the devastating chorus swings everything showcasing the artistry of the band. The single comes from the brains of Ingrid Håvik and Trond Bersu. Together, they create electronic pop that is borderline euphoric and pulse epic emotions into your soul. Their unique style has landed them praise from the Norwegian Music Publishers Association and 4 Gaffa Awards.

‘Mother’ pulses into your ears with some deep electronic pop beats that slap against your chest. The higher electronic tones are a delicate mist that parts for the vocals to shine. From the first moment, the single carries a powerful movement that has you marching down the soundscape toward the explosive chorus. Through the chorus, there are mini explosions of electronic sound that burst through your brain. These explosions subside for the verses that have a really smooth and polished flow. This movement of richness to explosion is handled so wonderfully and easily catches you in the sweep of sound.

As you march down the melody, Håvik’s vocals open the single with a smooth RnB style slide. She effortlessly fills you with the sense of being overwhelmed by what you are experiencing. This leads perfectly to the shout of the chorus as she states she needs to call her mother. There is a plea for comfort from her mother through the chorus that is so easy to relate to. While there is the urge to seek comfort from her mother in the chorus, this turns back into the uncertainty and overwhelmed feelings of the verses. The performance is interesting as you seek the comfort of your mother while understanding that this is the last resort.

Highasakite lure you into ‘Mother’ with a smooth and polished sound that leads to an explosive chorus packed with relatable emotions and situations. The music has a steady march to the beats that bolsters the electronic pop flow. Håvik’s vocals are smooth and passionate as she calls out for the comfort only a mother can provide.
