HERDS – Station of the Cross (2023)

Like a phoenix born from the ashes, so is the band HERDS emerging from the embers of the amber herd. Crossing genre boundaries, this post-punk meets prog-rock meets psychedelia meets indie-rock group is a layer of Pink Floyd tinged with Pixies and The Byrds. Already moving about in similar musical circles, the UK-based quintet combine their passion for music to create a sublime sound. As the amber herd, the lads built a loyal following with one record collector reviewer stating that “this lot should be massive if there is any justice”. Come with us as we take a gander at the bright, new, shiny band HERDS.

The debut single from HERDS, as well as the first track from their upcoming album, ‘Station of the Cross’ swirls dynamic guitars with pounding drums and sensational synths creating something, well, very different. A nostalgic flair exists in this new wave meets post-punk sound dragging us back to the 80s; however, simultaneously, there is a contemporary indie-pop spark enhancing the edginess of HERDS. Another interesting element is that while the arrangement has a harmonic unity of instruments, each instrument appears to have prominence making you pay attention to everything…but lose yourself in the musical mixture.

A relatively new group, HERDS can be considered minnows amidst sonic sharks. Despite their newness (for lack of a better word), ‘Station of the Cross’ has a sophistication to its composition. Innocence and elegant poeticism meld in this surrealist romance of a song, but the rawness also belies a mature robust nature. Innocent but mature, gentle but raw, HERDS is not to be ignored.
