Helmie – Lies (2021)

With her debut single ‘Lies’, Helmie is delving into feelings of love and betrayal. Inspired by personal feelings of betrayal after a couple of months of dating ended with a single phone call, she captures the pain and hurt that many can relate to. Through her alternative pop sound, she stabs you in the chest with pain, heartbreak and the questioning of why this happened.

While this is her debut solo single, Helmie has been writing songs from a young age. She has also been a member of a few bands who have played across England. The single is an amazing introduction to the emotive sound she has to offer and highlights the power of her songwriting skills.

‘Lies’ has a wonderful shimmering feeling to the open that slides into the enthralling beat. That beat grabs you and will not let up until your head is moving with it. Once you are fully under its control, it gives way to a dancing thump and tender piano line. The rather upbeat arrangement of the melody is a little at odds with the vocals, lyrics and overall betrayal of the song. There is a lot going on in the melody which is wonderful as it matches the turbulence of emotions that come after a breakup.

As the upbeat melody has you bopping to its beat, Helmie’s vocals are awash with pain, hurt and betrayal. Through the first verse, she fills you with her emotions and the blindsided feeling of a sudden end to a relationship you think is going well. This bounds into the chorus that hits out at the person who caused the hurt and questions whether everything was a lie. It is a rather poignant single that wonderfully touches on a range of emotions while letting out everything you wish to say at the end of the relationship.

Helmie uses a wonderful contrast of upbeat melodics and betrayed vocals to bring the emotions of an unexpected breakup to life in ‘Lies’. While the melody has a dancing feeling, it perfectly contrasts and complements the pain of the vocals. Every aspect of the single has been masterfully handled and makes you really excited for what she has for us in the future.
