Heddy Edwards – black tunnel (2024)

Stepping away from the traditional, tried, and tested realm of indie-pop and indie-rock, singer-songwriter Heddy Edwards explores and brings us a unique dreaminess that is purely hers and no one else’s. Known for her moving lyricism poetically interwoven with haunting melodies, the US-based artist captures hearts, turns heads, and ensnares your senses. Compared to the likes of Kate Bush, and her single ‘cherry picker’ being added to Spotify’s Kate Bush radio station, you can imagine the skin-chilling breath-taking nature of Edwards’ music. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘black tunnel’.

The first release in two years, ‘black tunnel’ follows the well-received singles ‘the moon below (and fall)’ and ‘cherry picker’. Recorded with producer Alan Day, most well known as the vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter in Four Year Strong, ‘black tunnel’ is “a sonic masterpiece that stands out from the zeitgeist and pushes the boundaries of conventional pop-rock…” Excited about this collaboration, Edwards shared that this first-time collaboration “was an incredible experience that expanded my artist boundaries. His expertise and unique ear not only captured the vision I had for the song, but exceeded it…”

So, what is this artistic vision Edwards speaks of?

Using a 90s pop-rock style, ‘black tunnel’ explores the world of mental health – specifically a reflection on mental health and isolation. Finding yourself in this situation, you not only face inner turmoil but the loss of friends and potentially family members who find the situation difficult to handle; so, there are not only internal challenges but a consequence you have to overcome in reality – which, unfortunately, only perpetuates the cycle.

While the vulnerability and rawness of her fragility revolve around the single, ‘black tunnel’ has a bold, confident execution. A melding of sophisticated maturity oozes from the production; however, each instrument walks its way expressing certain emotions before coming together in a harmonic symphony. The hard-hitting drums act as a pulsating heart, while the dynamic guitars rush back and forth with kaleidoscopic force oscillating between dark pain and light hopefulness.

“This song is deeply personal to me… In a way, I hope no one can relate to this song because the experience I’m recalling was painful, but if you do, I absolutely wrote it to reach you and bear witness to what you’ve been through.” – Heddy Edwards on ‘black tunnel’
