headcage – shrink (2022)
Inspired by the likes of Fightstar, Breaking Benjamin, Alexisonfire and Boston Manor, UK-based foursome headcage deliver profound, powerful and passionate hard rock in their music. Originating in Newcastle Upon Tyne, the lads have a reputation as a hard-hitting band with vulnerable messages woven into their dynamic melodies. Cementing themselves as a stand-out feature in the local Newcastle scene, headcage has a strong local following; however, they are turning heads across the globe with coverage from Roadie Music, BBC Radio 1, and Underground N’ Proud (to name a few). The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘shrink’.
Following their single ‘ruins’, ‘shrink’ is a fierce, fiery and “in your face” alternative rock tune. Touching on the topic of therapy, the lads use a personal narrative to share their social commentary about mental health. Many people believe it is important to contact therapists when the chips are down and improve mental health through treatment; however, there is more to it than just seeing someone – therapy can be traumatic. Detailing the frustrations of a patient undergoing therapy, ‘shrink’ is angsty, anxious and desperate looking at the concerns of people in treatment.
As with ‘ruins’ and ‘side by side’, there is a strong leaning toward alternative rock bands of the 90s and early 2000s. Powerful and hard-hitting, the pounding drums merge with dynamic guitars into a soul-stirring few minutes of rock. Interestingly enough, while the tinges of old-school rock are at the fore, headcage adds a modern-day alt-rock edginess to the track. What I love is how the band carries a listener on a rollercoaster ride with catchy choruses linked by infectious riffs. The vocals are particularly intriguing as there is a despair oozing from the sincere execution; however, aggression is clearly felt when the vocals adopt a “screaming stance”.
So, what are my thoughts on headcage? Gritty, grungy and intoxicating, ‘shrink’ rummages about your skull before sending shivers down your spine. I would highly recommend this band to, well, anyone!
