Hazlett – Slow Running (2023)

The latest offering from Australian folk artist Hazlett comes via Sweden with a new single ‘Slow Running’. The soft flowing melody captivates as it takes you on a journey where you can get lost in the gentle strums of his acoustic guitar. The lyrics hitch a ride on this melodic river of sound telling a melancholy tale of regret and lost love. The loneliness of recording in an off-grid cabin on Sweden’s west coast comes through in a calmness I can only liken to the cool waters of the Baltic Sea. Hazlett himself when talking about the track has mused whether we are becoming too cynical. With a pensive view of life, which leads us to bunker down and prepare for the worst, as we are unsure that the good times will last.

The video that accompanies the release perfectly complements the track. Completely stripped back, one man and his guitar perfectly display the subject of loneliness which runs throughout the track.  The contrast between the warmth of the music concealed in the minimalist wood-adorned interior of the cabin and the cold snow flurrying in the air outside is much like the song where the music is full of such warmth but has lyrics echoing cold regret.

This single is just a taster of things to come from Hazlett, as he is releasing a new EP entitled Goodbye to the Low Valley due December 8th. This will include both new and previously released material, with tracks such as ‘Mama’s Boy’ and ‘Missionary Feeling’.

If you’re already a fan of Hazlett then ‘Slow Running’ is a beautiful addition to his catalogue that you can savoir. But if you’re new to Hazlett, then this track is sure to lead you down a rabbit hole of his work, as it has me.  I for one cannot wait to listen to more from this exceptional artist.
