Hazel – Scream (2022)

As the child of a Danish mother and Turkish father and living in Switzerland and the United Kingdom, it’s fair to say singer-songwriter Hazel has a diverse background. Instead of ignoring this background, the UK-based artist draws it all together in an eclectic and intriguing sound. A new artist on the block, Hazel has only recently released her debut single ‘Scream’. Come with us as we dive into the track – metaphorical diving of course.

Inspired by the manner in which Billie Eilish and Lorde have re-interpreted and evolved contemporary pop, Hazel takes pop and turns it on its head. A synth-heavy song, ‘Scream’ seems to teeter between electropop, alternative pop and dance; however, with a strong melodic flow in its arrangement. Add Hazel’s dulcet tones atop the somewhat melancholic arrangement and you have a track to touch your heart and send your soul soaring into the ether.

Recorded with co-writer and producer Alex Riguerio, Hazel’s debut single just, as she says, “flowed and it was as if we both needed to write this song because it felt so right.” Aligning with the melancholic tinge in its smooth melody, ‘Scream’ has a rather poignant theme. Coming from her heart, Hazel explains that this is a song “…that underlines the sadness and desperation that comes with feeling lonely, left out, unheard and misunderstood by the people around you. It’s a cry for help at a time when I needed to let my feelings out.”

Touching on feelings of frustration, anger, angst and sadness, ‘Scream’ has a desperation about it that really cuts to your core. Hazel’s vocals elegantly express the frustration and despair in the theme. My own complaint about ‘Scream’ is that it was too short. I cannot wait for more from this shimmering gem of a musician.
