Hazel Gaze – Until I See You Again (2024)
With extensive backgrounds in the music and performing arts industry, Hazel Gaze is a combination of veteran musicians’ influences, experiences, knowledge and skills wrapped in hard-hitting rock awesomeness. In 2017, NYC-based Hanz (lead vocals) and Russ Soper (guitar and keyboards) released Hazel Gaze’s self-titled debut album just for the fun of it. Unfortunately, Covid-19 lockdowns caused the pair to take a hiatus, but the band is back in full force set to make 2024 the best year yet.
Sauntering into the new year, the Hazel Gaze sound swelled to a soul-stirring thrill of classic rock with all the trimmings. Joined by Mary Jo Verruto (keyboard and vocals), Konrad Payne (bass), Spiros Arnakis (drums), Molly Klein and Nicole Riolo (percussion and vocals), ‘Until I See You Again’ strips the heart-pounding crash of 70s rock in ‘Who’s Sorry Now’ and ‘Dirty Little Secrets’ to a slower, gentle, soothing melody that is heart-pounding in a different way.
Raised on a combination of Uriah Heep and Creedence Clearwater Revival, ‘Until I See You Again’ immediately dragged me back to the days of my youth. From the opening piano to the crashing guitars, powerful bass and pounding drums, every second drags you closer to a bright, shining light of kaleidoscopic rock. First, you teeter on the edge, then the crescendo of the lead guitar tips you over letting you fall into the blissful wonderland of 70s rock.
The song is insatiable as a studio recording but, for me, it is the transition of a live session vibe that adds an extra oomph. The raw intensity of ‘Until I See You Again’ exudes from the composition; however, it is the vulnerability and fragility dripping from Hanz’s gruff vocals with poetic lyricism that seeps into your soul.
“’Until I See You Again’ was written about someone very dear who tragically passed away far too young. It’s something I’m sure many can relate to. These types of events always give pause as well as perspective about appreciating people and taking full advantage of the time we’re here together…” – Russ Soper on ‘Until I See You Again’
