Harry Kappen – WarGames (2022)
Inspired by life in its entirety and human existence, singer-songwriter Harry Kappen creates eclectic songs about, well, life. Kappen embraced his passion for music at a young age composing his first song at age 10, and now he is a renowned musician and music therapist. With experience performing in bands across Europe, including the band Kapsonic, Kappen has a strong following which is enhanced with current coverage from Sinusoidal Music, Music Existence, Sounds Good Webzine, Vents Magazine, Music For All, BGfm Radio, iHeart Radio and various playlists. The latest addition to Kappen’s discography is the single ‘WarGames’.
Following his well-received track ‘Barefoot In The Dew’, Harry Kappen adopts a hard-hitting rock sound in ‘WarGames’. As with ‘Barefoot In The Dew’, this new song retains a reminiscence of old-school David Bowie; however, modern-day alternative rock is sprinkled across the melody. Interestingly enough, the bold guitar-driven song hits you in the chest with its bold sonic blast but, simultaneously, has a soothing sensation underlying its melody.
As I mentioned, Harry Kappen uses human existence as an inspiration and ‘WarGames’ is another personal piece of music. A provocative social commentary on a desperate reality, ‘WarGames’ is a protest song against the destruction we see and feel in the 21st century. With the Russian invasion of Ukraine, climate change, fake news, conspiracy theories, and the intolerance and ignorance of people across the globe, Kappen felt he needed to speak out against the abuses and threats.
“Back in the days of the Vietnam War, the charts were full of protest songs, but not now. Why not, I thought. There is reason enough. ‘WarGames’ had to be made because it bothered me that there are so few protest songs in the top 40 while there is so much going on in the world…” – Harry Kappen in an interview with Lost In The Manor
What I find intriguing about ‘WarGames’ is not the profound lyricism or significant evocative themes, but how the melody aptly represents the theme. Aggressive, brash and a slap to the face, Harry Kappen pours all our frustration, anger and angsty vulnerability into just under four minutes of music.
