Harry Kappen – Not All Of Us Agreed (2023)

At the age of 10, singer-songwriter Harry Kappen composed his first song with child-like innocence…little did he know where it would take him. A music industry veteran, the Dutch musician has built a reputation for bold, confident music in his live shows performing with numerous bands throughout Europe. His honest, insightful lyricism combined with intriguing melodies demands attention from all audiences. Now, a renowned musician, producer, music therapist and lecturer for an international master’s degree in music therapy, Kappen resonates with people in diverse arenas.

Unafraid to shy away from more provocative topics in society, Harry Kappen is eager to tackle anti-war sentiments, your position on sociopolitical issues and climate change, and tackling Artificial Intelligence. Following his critically acclaimed single ‘The Freedom Inside’ – a song inviting individuals to consider global change; ‘Not All Of Us Agreed’ “is an indictment of the rapid development of new technologies, particularly AI, and the many questions it raises for human beings.”

As if having a conversation with a friend discussing the implications involved in the growing use of Artificial Intelligence, Kappen keeps a cool calm tone atop the energising guitar-driven arrangement. Retaining the obscurity of David Bowie in ‘Not All Of Us Agreed’, there is a slight eclecticism in the single; however, a classic rock tone breaks forth in the melody. From a harmonic blending of guitars and drums, the arrangement crescendos into a bold wash of rock swarming about you.

One aspect I find intriguing about the melody, lyricism and overall theme is how each element comes together in a sonic whole. Insightful lyrics are beautifully expressed with tender consideration but also a forceful “well what do you think then” – not all of us agree. Beginning as a mere chat about the introduction of AI it is simple, relaxing and chilled-out. When the conversation intensifies, an electric guitar builds in intensity and pushes through in all its glory. This represents, at least to me, the significance of AI and its effects on human life – or something like that.

“The lyrics of the song provide an avenue to think about our current and future interaction with technology. It questions the reality of the news we see, if we will one day communicate with our government only through robots, and whether humans will eventually turn into algorithms.”
