Harry Kappen – Cool down (2024)

Eager to explore all elements of life, from gritty sociopolitical discord to the happiness of being in love; a journey that he shares with listeners in his music. Known for confident performances and moving songs, the Dutch musician captivates listeners quickly garnering loyal followers – I mean, it’s like you can’t get enough after hearing his music for the first time, instant fan. His brutal honesty wrapped in poetic lyricism resonates with audiences as the soothing of his tunes dull the sting of existential realisations.

At the end of last year, Kappen reached our ears with his single ‘Not All Of Us Agreed’ – a profound piece not only melodically intricate but offered “an avenue to think about our current and future interaction with technology. It questions the reality of the news we see, if we will one day communicate with our government through robots, and whether humans will eventually turn into algorithms…” In the new single, ‘Cool down’, he drops the tone a bit singing about slowing down and thinking instead of rushing into things.

Following the well-received track ‘One life’, Kappen shifts from a slower, darker, almost morose tone (not a bad morose) to a more upbeat sound in ‘Cool down’. Another drag back to the rock sounds of the 60s and 70s, ‘Cool down’ breathes life into nostalgic whispers of yesteryear. Yet, while the melody has a retro feel, its depth lies in the strikingly relevant message of stepping away from difficult reality and trying to find our heads – an issue that transcends generations and will probably do so for the rest of time. Kappen explains:

“…’Cool down’ is an urgent appeal to humanity to slow down, not get ahead of yourself, to keep everything in perspective, to give yourself the time to realise what is really important to you and the people around you.”

Taken off his upcoming album Time will tell, ‘Cool down’ is a cog in Kappen’s melodic exposition of our lives. The single might be heavy but its upbeat, toe-tapping, jovial sound hints at both severity and serenity. Hard-hitting guitars match pounding drums, while an interspersed piano brings a flair of sparkling light through the sonic cloud.
