Harpa – Gone (2024)

Heartfelt and tender, singer-songwriter Harpa has a penchant for taking intimate experiences and stretching them out in eloquent melodies. From the poetic lyricism to the intriguing music, the UK-based singer-songwriter brings rock-tinged flair to her storytelling. Over the past couple of years, she has enthralled us (and a ton of other international listeners) by looking at our relationship with ourselves and others. ‘Hollow’ explored the cycle of falling in love, while ‘Growing Pains’ was all about “transitioning into womanhood…”. Today, we take a gander at her most recent release, ‘Gone’.

Following her well-received 2023 singles ‘Leave Me Behind’ and ‘Shrink’, Harpa steps into 2024 with ‘Gone’. Shifting from indie-pop ballads, ‘Gone’ taps into the harder, heavier tones of alternative rock illustrating an evolution in Harpa’s sound. Interestingly, while the melody is a bit more “in your face”, Harpa’s pitch-perfect vocals retain its signature clarity, intensity and emotion. I suppose this shows her versatility and flexibility to remain distinctive regardless of the overall genre.

Written and produced by Harpa and her band, ‘Gone’ is an immersive force of rock music. From the scorching guitars to the crashing drums, bold bass and twinkling keys, listening to ‘Gone’ is like being lost in a sonic hurricane. Darkness twirls about with kaleidoscopic lines slicing amidst the chaos; however, an anchor remains as Harpa holds you close like a silvery thread in a rush of insanity. While there is a tumultuous energy to ‘Gone’, the track is empowering with a hint of vulnerability. Harpa explains:

“’Gone’ is about a friend I had, who I always thought was better than me. I’d constantly compare myself to her. After that friendship ended it took me a long time to shake that feeling, but eventually, I came to see her for what she was. It’s kind of a message to her saying I’m no longer waiting around for you to come back. I’m moving on…”

Sincere, sentimental, heartwarming, reflective and very relatable, Harpa moves us once again with her insatiable new single ‘Gone’.
