Hannah Stow – But I’ll Lie (2024)

You might know Hannah Stow by her viral mash-up of Tracey Chapman’s iconic ‘Fast Cars’, but she is far more than just an awesome cover singer. At age 12 her father bought her an electric guitar and Stow discovered a passion for songwriting; skip ahead to 2024 and she has released several critically acclaimed original singles, collaborated with various industry professionals, gained a following with her confident stage performances, and reached international audiences far beyond her Australian borders. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘But I’ll Lie’.

Following her well-received singles ‘In The Dark’ and ‘Dawson Road’, Hannah Stow continues to explore various pop styles with a distinctive eclectic twirl in ‘But I’ll Lie’. While ‘In The Dark’ and ‘Dawson Road’ lean toward an indie-pop tone, the new track brings a hint of synth-pop into her repertoire. Recorded and produced with Calvin Bennett, ‘But I’ll Lie’ is an elegant fusion of shimmering synths, bold beats, with a rhythmic guitar slivering through the melody. One aspect I find particularly interesting about ‘But I’ll Lie’ is the fusion of vintage and contemporary pop – the hit of guitars breathes life into old-school rock while the powerful synths drive contemporary sounds with an 80s edginess.

Just as the melody shines with intricacy, the theme aligns with further complexity. Eloquent and sophisticated, Stow’s silvery vocals journey through the treacherous realm of relationships. Fragile and vulnerable, there is tragic melancholy in ‘But I’ll Lie’; however, the single presents bold confidence and resilience when faced with issues of love and self-identity. Stow explains:

“This song touches on the trials and tribulations of being hidden in a same-sex relationship… I wrote this some years ago… I decided it was too good not to release. I got Calvin Bennett to add some sexy guitar riffs, and this quickly became a smooth listening track with a really raw meaning about love and identity…”
