Guy Davis – Late Night Laundrette (2021)

One of the latest unheard indie gems to hit our radar, Guy Davis is a singer-songwriter set for success. Inspired by classic rock, 80s synth-pop, indie-rock and coming of age films, Davis encapsulates warmth, innocence and charm in his guitar-driven sound. With only two songs to his name, he does fall in that “newbie” category but he has also turned the heads of notable publications. Featured on Edgar Allan Poets, Roadie Music, Music Is To Blame and several online radio stations (including Amazing Radio), Davis is slowly building a following. We introduce you to this UK-based artist with ‘Late Night Lauderette’.

With his mature vocals, dynamic guitar and steady drums, Davis nods to the indie-rock sounds of yesteryear. Yet, while the melody and tone have a 90s rock sound, there is a contemporary twist to the track with the expression of youthfulness in Davis’ gruff vocals. It is difficult to describe, but there seems to be a nostalgic quality to what is a modern-day song. I suppose this is a “feel song” rather than a “describe song” when it comes to melody. The thing is, while there is a melodic sophistication to the song, the lyricism adds true poignancy to ‘Late Night Launderette’.

Davis explains that “the song is mainly written for people who spend a lot of time in their own thoughts…set in a launderette, it describes the stream of consciousness of someone sinking further and further into a mental rabbit hole…” The existential truth of “zoning out” is one most of us face in uncertain times, but it is sonically represented in ‘Late Night Launderette’. Its cinematic ambience can easily have you meandering down a path of daydreaming, but it is Davis’ rich vocals that act as an anchor drawing you back to reality. Delicately walking the line between wistful naivety and mature insight, ‘Late Night Launderette’ is filled with honesty, sincerity and sentimentality.

In addition to this single, Guy Davis released an official music video for ‘Late Night Laundrette’. As the video uses lighting effects that can cause seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy, I was unable to view the video. Please watch at your own discretion.
