Guri Yeller – Seeing Double (2024)
Pushing the boundaries of sonic conventionalism to experimental genre landscapes, Guri Yeller are anything but pedestrian. Hailing from the UK, Bolton to be exact, the pair saunter across the realm of synth-driven alternative pop, indie-rock, psychedelic rock, and a ton of other stuff to intoxicate listeners. Formed by long-time friends Matthew Banton and Harry Paterson, Guri Yeller has been sharing music with the masses for a few years; however, this is our first time hearing the lads. Join us as we delve headfirst into their most recent release, ‘Seeing Double’.
Following the well-received single ‘At the Overpass’, ‘Seeing Double’ is a leap into unexplored areas for the pair. Unlike the indie-rock leanings we hear in ‘At the Overpass’ and ‘Study In Pink’, ‘Seeing Double’ has Guri Yeller saunter across a somewhat lighter indie-pop sound; yet, just as the pop flutters along, an avant-garde alternativeness dominates with psychedelic synth-driven waves. Interestingly, while I can tag different labels on Guri Yeller’s music, the track is one to be felt and not merely heard or read about to appreciate its eclecticism.
Dragging us back to the old-school Depeche Mode days with a strong synth-driven sound, ‘Seeing Double’ is a nostalgic whisper; then again, just as there are vintage tones, the lads bring contemporary edginess to the washed-out, hushed waves of music. Fresh but surprisingly familiar, Guri Yeller’s new track is not only a “…bold statement of their artistic growth and unwavering commitment to deliver innovative and compelling music…”, it is the transcendence of good music across decades.
The melody is intriguing with its waves of synths twirling about in a warm sonic caress – the wash of twinkling sound linking with a pulsating drumbeat. Yet, for me at least, the band’s vocals insert an extra something special to ‘Seeing Double’. Harry Paterson’s rhythmic falsetto brings vibrancy to the kaleidoscopic tune offering more sparkle, shimmer and excitement.
As I mentioned, this is our introduction to Guri Yeller, and boy am I pleased the lads passed along our virtual desk. I am eager to hear more from the band and highly recommend you keep an eye (and an ear) on the talented pair. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
