Gucci leek – Pretty girls luv Gucci (2024)
Bringing breath to old-school hip hop and a bound of rap floating throughout, singer-songwriter Gucci leek adds a new sound to the hip hop/rap genre trap. Originally a sub-genre of hip hop, trap began appearing in the late 90s and early 2000s as a way of fusing EDM with the lyrical stylings of rap; however, as the years progressed so did the influence of trap. Moving across the spectrum of Afro-rap, emo rap and Latin trap, a world of sound finds its mesh in the intriguing sub-genre. Gucci leek takes it a step further, embracing this style’s heavier side.
Hailing from New Jersey, Gucci leek (also known as Maalik Boggan) found his passion for hip hop after listening to rapper Gucci mane. In fact, his interest in Gucci mane led to the title “Gucci leek” – a nickname given to him in high school. While the US-based musician has only a single release to stream, his confidence and enthusiasm for his work stand out in a sophisticated style. Interestingly, despite the sophistication of the debut single ‘Pretty girls luv Gucci’, a heavy grittiness is heard enhancing the grungy side of rap.
A collaboration with producers William Alexander and Rayonabeat, another up-and-coming artist/sound engineer from the NJ scene, ‘Pretty girls luv Gucci’ is a bold tune that can easily become stuck in your head. Ethereal synths are layered atop piercing beats with Gucci leek’s gruff vocals whisper a 90s rap edge to the single. I find this single interesting because it links aspects of electronic pop with a softer ambience to the brashness of abrupt rapping.
Just as the melody is entrancing, the lyricism has a depth – as is the case with many rap/hip hop artists. In ‘Pretty girls luv Gucci’, Gucci leek tackles the intricacies of social interaction, relationships and abrupt responses. In this single, the Gucci leek “tells a female to watch how she treats him because she might mess around and lose him. He wants her to remember he is still that guy that all the pretty girls love.”
