Grown Bones – Business Casual (2022)

Drawing together elements of grunge, indie-rock, emo and pop-rock, US-based Grown Bones is a blast of rock to pound on your eardrums. Alright, that sounds a bit intense, but the foursome does have a strong sound to share with the masses. Featured on Rising Artists Music Blog and Less Than 1000 Followers, the group is reaching listeners on an international level. I’ll admit, this is my introduction to Grown Business, but so far, I am quite intrigued by their music. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Business Casual’.

So, I just mentioned Grown Bones are a blast of rock to your ears, but in ‘Business Casual’ the lads draw themselves in a bit. As with the previous track, ‘Anything Else Would Die Here’, the band push an almost palpable sense of vulnerability. Movements from 90s rock, grunge and alternative rock can be heard; however, the melodic arrangement showcases a unique sound from Grown Bones. Last year, there was boldness in their sound, but this year a layer of vulnerability lies atop the pounding drums and dynamic guitars. Powerful and striking, the well-textured track indicates how hard-hitting rock can be reined in to align with a bittersweet sense of anxiety.

While the melody shows innovation, versatility and Grown Bones’ natural talent, it is the conceptual theme that adds a sense of poignancy. The band explain that ‘Business Casual’ is a “single about the emptiness of burnout and the longing for freedom therein.” With melancholic lyrics elegantly shared through gruff vocals, you can feel the sense of desperation in ‘Business Casual’. Effortlessly demonstrating degrees of frustration and anxiety, Grown Bones capture the hopelessness we all feel after dealing with burnout. Yet, there is also sincerity and sentimentality in the bittersweet track – a brutal honesty that is completely genuine.

In addition to the single, Grown Bones released a conceptual video for ‘Business Casual’. You can view it below or on their YouTube channel.
