Greg Loftus – I Don’t Want To Die In San Antone (2024)
Cities and towns, big or small, can get touchy when artists/musicians somehow mention them in some negative context in their songs. Back in the late sixties, John Fogerty wrote one of the better Creedence Clearwater Revival songs called ‘Lodi’ in not a superlative context, and since then the city hung a board at its limits that still says: “Everybody is welcome to Lodi, except John Fogerty.”
Now, Boston singer-songwriter Greg Loftus is coming up with a single titled ‘I Don’t Want To Die in San Antone’. By the title of it, it doesn’t sound like a great context, but, by the explanation of it, and surely by the sound of the song itself, it just might be hard to expect the city of San Antonio, Texas to have negative feelings towards Loftus.
As the songwriter explains, “I have no real problem with San Antonio,” Loftus laughs, “It’s about not being thrilled with your current trajectory and trying not to get stuck in a place that you didn’t plan on, whether it be mentally or physically.”
Yet, with or without the explanation, this song taken from Loftus’ latest album No Kings in the Wild, is a great slice of rock-infused Americana – well-structured, excellent arrangement and some passionate vocals from Loftus that suit the song so well. It was the first song Loftus wrote for his new album and he obviously invested quite a bit of passion and feeling in it, something that seeps through the recording so vividly.
Loftus, who has been writing songs since the second he picked up a guitar at 12 years old, has sussed the essence of what good roots rock music should sound like and is obviously a force to be reckoned with within the genre, making his latest album something to seek out.
