Grace & Moji – Sad Times (2023)
Constantly exploring intricate emotions and experiences in their music, Grace & Moji are a profound pair; however, the sincerity and uplifting sentimentality of their melodies add merriment to the seriousness. A unique coupling, Swedish musician Martin Wave and Korean artist Grace Hong incorporate not only various influences but also cultural differences into their music. In an interview with The Other Side Reviews, Hong explains the cultural and generational differences: “In essence, though, we really see more of the commonalities than the differences…” Wave further shared that “…the better you try to understand each other, the better it gets”; and the pair take this understanding even further in their single ‘Sad Times’.
In the well-received single ‘Tipping Point’, Grace & Moji captured the significance of communication in relationships with an intimate, personal flair. In ‘Sad Times’, the US-based duo leans further into self-discovery and awareness blending the need for self-reflection in a hopeful call for empowerment. Hong shares:
“Over the past few years, I’ve been through a tough time internally, navigating through a dark night of the soul where I’ve woven in and out of deeply sad periods. At the same time, I’ve been evolving rapidly, both internally and externally. The process of growing and shedding old parts of ourselves can be painful, facing the shadow sides of yourself, but in that journey, you ultimately end up in a better place.”
Unlike ‘Tipping Point’ and the debut single ‘Our Love’, ‘Sad Times’ is an upbeat song filled with kaleidoscopic energy and dance vibes. A strong indie-pop sound exists in the single; however, infusions of pop, disco and roots music slither through the track with synth-inspired beats keeping time. The single might be called ‘Sad Times’ but there is no way one can call this a sad song. As Hong explained, ‘Sad Times’ is a process of growing through pain and pleasure. ‘Sad Times’ is the embodiment of those profound thoughts and the joyful emergence of positive self-healing.
In addition to the single, Grace & Moji released an official lyric video for ‘Sad Times’. You can view the video below or on Grace & Moji’s YouTube channel.
