GRAACE – Honey (2024)
The world of pop is morphing into something fresh with the emergence of a plethora of sub-sections, offering some unique takes on a genre which has pretty much run the music industry for the last 60 years. Australian artist GRAACE, fresh off a sold-out show in London, is tapping into the fledgling movement of alternative pop with her new single ‘Honey’.
Stemming from the age-old strife of breakups, ‘Honey’ embodies the welcome distraction a new partner can bring, even if it is just a fleeting indulgence. The confidence boost that the welcome attention can bring manifests in GRAACE’s vocals, seductively rich with an air of contemplation of the reasons which brought about this experience. Musically the track ticks all the boxes you’d expect of a pop song with a rumbling baseline, it’s a solid backing to the vocals, which I don’t want to keep labouring the point but really are the star of the show.
Being seven years into her career, it is evident that GRAACE has picked up many tricks along the way, which have shaped her into a serious artist who is one to keep an eye on. Her new EP Afterimage, which came out on 16th August, backs up my opinion perfectly. She definitely isn’t a one-trick pony, each song has its own unique appeal and displays that as an artist she isn’t afraid to experiment and show some vulnerability, which is explained perfectly by GRAACE herself. She shares, “Afterimage captures the essence of carrying past relationships into new experiences, incorporating the lessons, heartbreak, and love from those encounters”.
This is something I really admire, as too many acts seeking success can get lost in what they believe is “their sound” and fast become boring. I personally just can’t see this happening with GRAACE and I’m interested in seeing where she goes from here.
