Golden Richards – Honey West Kung Fu (2021)

Two lads meet at a midnight showing of Enter The Dragon. The lads get talking and find they share a love for Bruce Lee, tetherball, Borg and McEnroe tennis, Trans Am and surfing. The lads come across a young lady eating red vines at a drive-thru. The result: the insatiable trio called Golden Richards.

Showing a reminiscence to Green Day, The Maine and Dodgy, Billy Richards (lead vocals, lead guitar, bass and synths), Gil Golden (guitar) and Maryann Magic (backing vocals) are breeding a new brand of pop-rock for the 21st Century. Newbies on the scene, Golden Richards have only two singles to their name. However, this doesn’t mean they aren’t making waves among curators. Featured on notable blogs, podcasts and online radio stations, the trio is reaching a global audience. The latest addition to their growing discography is ‘Honey West Kung Fu’.

Following their single ‘Borg Vs. McEnroe’, ‘Honey West Kung Fu’ is a nod to the pop-rock of the late-90s/early 2000s. Dodgy meets McFly with gritty vocals, Golden Richards has found the balance between head-banging rock and toe-tapping pop. With dynamic guitars and pounding drums, ‘Honey West Kung Fu’ is a flowing melody plunging you into a hazy swirl of sound.

“The song is about those summer days when you are young and you and your friends start to get a little bored after a while and a new girl moves in and you think she is the answer to new exciting things happening. Summer power-pop song for driving with the top down vibe.” – Golden Richards on ‘Honey West Kung Fu’

Some songs have a deeper meaning but ‘Honey West Kung Fu’ is exactly what it says on the label. I’m not insinuating that the trio lack depth, not at all! It’s just that this single is a happier, cheerier single without any complex metaphors. This single is an upbeat, buoyant track filled with addictive summertime joviality. Yes, it touches on the assumption of fun being had with change, but the infectious vibe makes it a lighthearted tune. A cheerful, spirited single, ‘Honey West Kung Fu’ hits the nail of youthful innocence.
