Goddamn Wolves – Seven Days A Week (2024)

If The Pixies were to have a kid with Ash but it was adopted and raised by Dodgy, Goddamn Wolves would be that child. Living in the teenage attitude years with a “yeah, well I don’t care what you think”, Chris Wilding (guitars and vocals), Laura McCullough (bass and vocals) and Drew Foglia (drums and vocals) stick their finger up to modern society, conventionalism and anything trying to pigeonhole Goddamn Wolves. Named after a pack animal, the sounds may be eclectic but there is always unity amongst the members; a harmonic unity that emanates from controversial melodies to an enchanted audience.

Originally released in 2023, but re-released today as a shorter radio edit, the 2024 version of ‘Seven Days A Week’ follows the well-received track ‘Nowhere’. 2023 offered an evolution in the Goddamn Wolves sound retaining the distinctive combination of old-school grunge/indie-rock but with a slide to smoother alternative rock. Not a devolution, but the 2024 ‘Seven Days A Week’ is more punch-in-the-face than the McCullough/Wilding collaboration.

Recorded at North Carolina-based Found After Dark studios with Max Gowan and Travis Harrington, ‘Seven Days After Dark’ is a flowing blend of sophisticated elegance with a bold rawness lingering in the song. Crashing drums match a bold bass and searing guitar, all flooded with grunge-like distortions as each instrument demands attention. A delicate line of youthful innocence and mature worldliness, ‘Seven Days A Week’ captures human emotion with sincere fragility.

The melody itself is insatiable capturing any 90s indie-rock fan’s heart; however, the interplay between McCullough and Wilding’s vocals represents the underlying rollercoaster ride of emotions. An intricate flow of male and female vocals warm your heart holding you in a tight embrace, but simultaneously nips at your heels with a cheeky brashness.

So, what do I think of Goddamn Wolves and ‘Seven Days A Week’. Insightful, reflective, honest and original, the trio are a thrashing crash of rain on a stormy night; then again, they are also the exquisite smell of rain rising from the wet ground. Goddamn Wolves are goddamn great, and I recommend them to goddamn everyone.
