Gnarfunkel – A Million Monkeys (2022)

Putting emotions into words can be difficult, particularly with love, leaving you feeling that a monkey wildly typing on a typewriter would do a better job. This rather whimsical thought forms the basis of ‘A Million Monkeys’ by Gnarfunkel. Using their signature funky sound, they bring a slide of soulful guitar to the whimsy of their lyrics for a chill yet groovy sound.

The unique mixture of the band’s sound fills this single and has been electrifying audiences at their live shows. With a heavy dose of funk, they bring a dash of psychedelic rock and Latin rhythms to outrageous songs that flow through time and space. The unique sounds come from the collective musicality of Myles Hildebrand (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboard), Tyler Lanigan (vocals, guitar, saxophone, sitar), Clark Buchanan (bass guitar) and Sebastian Valdivia (percussion).

The guitars that open ‘A Million Monkeys’ slowly draw you in with a folk-rock vibe. There is an easy feeling to the melody that makes you want to sway to the tone, before the funkier tones take over. As the single progresses, the melody gets this deep bass twang that heralds the incoming funky tones. The guitars call out against the funky rock foundation of the melody with a rather wistful touch. This touch is solidified by the harmonica that calls and rides the waves of the melody.

While the music has you swaying to the funky rock sound, the vocals bring a layered folk feeling of tender emotions. Through the performance, you can feel the overwhelming love they feel for someone and the slight frustration at not being able to express this with words. It is a wonderful feeling because they are able to beautifully relate their emotions through the description of not being able to. There is such a good vibe to this song that you can’t help but feel an injection of happiness. The vocal performance has a great flow that moves from a folky movement to a deeper slight indie rock movement.

Gnarfunkel has you feeling their affection as they release their frustration at not being able to relay this emotion effectively through ‘A Million Monkeys’. The melody has a light funky vibe that merges with the folky overtones. The vocals have a layered movement that slides from folk to indie rock.
