GLYTSH – V.H.S (Vulgar Holy Spirit) (2023)

Bonding over a passion for heavy music, GLYTSH is the forceful stylings of French singer Jennifer Deihl and Swiss guitarist Claire Genoud. While this project is relatively new having formed in late-2021/2022, the London-based lasses are already seasoned musicians with experience touring at iconic venues, playing festivals and pretty much making noise for the masses. Performing as a dynamic duo, Deihl (aka Luna Blake) and Genoud (aka Hella Sin) intoxicate listeners with their high voltage, energetic and mind-boggling melding of hard rock sounds across a haunting soundscape.

Blasting onto the airwaves, GLYTSH has already turned the heads of notable critics (Rock Era Magazine, Right Chord Music) and radio presenters (BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio, Radio X), and now we’re going to take you on a ride through their sonic swirl. Following their well-received singles ‘SAV@GE’ and ‘(Hard)core memory’, ‘V.H.S (Vulgar Holy Spirit)’ is GLYTSH’s first release in 2023. It comes just before their debut performance with Tom Saint and an upcoming debut EP. Anyway, let’s get to the music.

As with ‘SAV@GE’, there is a hard-hitting forcefulness to ‘V.H.S (Vulgar Holy Spirit)’. Actually, hard-hitting forcefulness barely describes the power with which GLYTSH hits you. Listening to this industrial metal meets hard rock single, you are immediately hit between the eyes and laid out on the floor. Fear, trepidation and concern coarse through your veins and you’re not entirely sure what to expect – all you know is that the music will be an otherworldly wash of music. Angry, yes. Rattling, yes. Clear insanity, yes; but all will be a magical wash of music.

At first listen, Genoud’s guitars wrap Diehl’s harsh screams in a metal container; however, the guitars step out with bold riffs giving you an extra punch of old-school metal meets punk. Gritty, grimy and a mark of craziness, the oddly well-placed instrumentation marks a gutsy but dark soundscape.

One aspect I find intriguing about GLYTSH and ‘V.H.S (Vulgar Holy Spirit)’ is the passionate empowerment hidden in their music. In fact, there is a love song tenderness lurking beneath the music giving it a gentle caress. When speaking about ‘V.H.S (Vulgar Holy Spirit)’, Diehl explains that it “…is about a lost relationship trying to be resurrected. It’s a dark romantic tale 2.0 with a Frankenstein flavour…”
