Glossy Boy – Hey Julia (2022)

If The Kooks were to have a child with Blossoms, but it was raised by The 1975, the chances are it would be Glossy Boy. Inspired by the sound of British indie-pop, the UK-based band are a bundle of laughs wrapped in an intriguing sonic package. We are already aware of singer-songwriter Chris Pidsley, so when he decided to create a threesome with his friends Ryan Bunce (bass) and Zak Thomas Johnson (drums), we were happy to take a listen. Come with us as we delve into their debut single ‘Hey Julia’.

Following their three-track remake of Pidsley’s previous material, but now with three creative brains instead of one, ‘Hey Julia’ is the first single that is completely Glossy Boy. Toe-tapping from the first chord, the song is upbeat, jovial and has a bounce to the melody. Easy, laidback and filled with groovy vibes, ‘Hey Julia’ is a track you have playing at full blast while you drive your Cadillac down the road as the wind blows through your hair. Interestingly enough, while the band explain that the song is “just based around having a good time and making music with friends”, a heart-warming tug exists in the lyricism with sweet, sensitive tones.

Penned as a love song, of sorts, to a girl Pidsley met at university, there is a charm to the anthemic tune. The thing is, while ‘Hey Julia’ keeps you dancing about, it is an intriguing introspective of vulnerability and fragility when meeting someone for the first time – the “oh my God, I can’t believe this is real and I’m totally crazy in love” stage. Youthful innocence oozes forth in the song and you hear sophistication but a naïve whimsy in ‘Hey Julia’.
