gloomy june – Always Gonna Let You Down (2022)

There are times when you feel like you need to escape from a situation and get back to your comfort zone. This feeling has been picked up by gloomy june and turned into the 80s vibes of ‘Always Gonna Let You Down’. Using a story told from the perspective of someone having a terrible time at a party, the single is packed with escapism and a need for comfort.

The song first came to life when Devin Nelson (guitar) arrived at band practice with a dancing synth instrumental for the track. Alexi Belchere (vocals) provided the lyrics, written during the summer of 2020 and picking up all the emotions that were flowing at the time. Jack Sunquist (bass) and Ash Hyatt (drums) rounded off the track, creating the engaging retro tones it currently sports.

‘Always Gonna Let You Down’ brings the retro tones to life from the first shimmer of synths. There is a real 80s vibe to the sound as it pops above your head like the flash of lights. It is almost impossible to listen to this melody and not want to move to the rhythm. The pulse of tones that fill the low levels get you bopping, while the shimmer of the higher levels moves your shoulders to their flow. While there is an infectious movement to the single, the melody creates the perfect foundation for the vocals to really shine. There is a touch of something familiar to the melody that brings a wash of nostalgia to the track, but this has been tempered by a contemporary edge that shines through the vocals.

As you are riding the nostalgia waves of the melody, the vocals bolster the retro touch. While you are inundated with the retro vibes, Belchere’s vocals start to build through the verses and grab your hand on the chorus. There is a feeling of building stress through the verse that is soothed by the chorus which is like a hug from someone you care about. Threaded into all of this, is an escapism that we are all able to relate to. The lyrics take you to a party where you are not having a great time and doubts about your relationship start to creep in. As the chorus hits, the escapism of the lyrics is turned up and you want to head out to a place where you can be alone with someone you care about.

gloomy june have you moving to retro tones as they bring an 80s touch to the urge to escape a stressful situation in ‘Always Gonna Let You Down’. The melody is packed with nostalgic vibes as you dance to the sound of the 80s. These tones are picked up by the vocals before they are turned into contemporary emotions that are so easy to relate to.
