Glass Cases – Chemicals (2021)
Merging elements of indie-pop with indie-rock, US-based group Glass Cases are breeding a new sound for their global audience. Focusing on sharing relatable messages in their toe-tapping melodies, the trio has been featured in notable publications, such as It’s All Indie and FV Music Blog, as well as several online radio stations. Following their well-received album In Between, Glass Cases release the single ‘Chemicals’.
Upbeat and infectious, ‘Chemicals’ is a jovial track with a charmingly laidback quality. Yet, while it appears all “bright and shiny” on the surface something darker lies beneath. Touching on issues of mental health and inner conflict, ‘Chemicals’ is filled with pain, fear and despair. What I find intriguing is the juxtaposition between buoyant melodies and desperate lyricism.
Effortlessly melding pounding drums, dynamic guitars and simplistic piano undertones, ‘Chemicals’ can captivate you from the outset. Along with its harmonic melody, Glass Cases showcase their versatility by incorporating modern pop in the indie-inspired single. Add the rich vocals of bassist Alex van Keulen and you have an introspective track filled with warmth.
Accompanying the single ‘Chemicals’, Glass Cases released an official music video. Filmed at an abandoned gas station, the stark setting is a perfect representation of the disconcerting concept. Frustration shines through with the tormented looks, brash handling of instruments and unsettling stone-faced jamming. Thing is, while this is a visual representation of haunted misery, there is a powerful intensity in its simplicity.
