Glashus – Cry Wolf (2023)

After meeting in The Netherlands while performing as session musicians, Swedish singer-songwriters iönä and Mattias Norén quickly became good friends. Eventually deciding to combine their natural talents, the singer-songwriters created electropop sensation Glashus. With only one year under their belt, Glashus is already drawing international acclaim. Described as “pop perfection…” (Popmuzik) and “…one of the strongest acts on the electronic pop scene” (Hymn), the dynamic duo is a force to be reckoned with.

Following their track ‘vägskäl’, Glashus is broadening its horizons and audience reach by releasing songs with English lyrics. In an interview with the Swedish music blog Hymn, the duo share that “the first song we wrote together was in English, then we changed it to Swedish which became our single ‘vägskal’. iönä lives in London and has friends there who don’t know Swedish but sing along to the Glashus songs…when they wondered what the lyrics were about, we were inspired to make English versions so that more people could take part.”

Hot on the heels of ‘vägskäl’, Glashus release the first of several English songs with ‘Cry Wolf’. Adopting a light, whimsical and wistful sound, the pair immediately send listeners twirling about with multi-coloured lights drifting before their eyes. A synth-driven single, Glashus retain the laidback electropop sound for which they are known and enjoyed. iönä’s mellifluous vocals teeter on the jovial arrangement traipsing about like a wistful fairy in a sonic forest. Yet, while there is a bounciness and cheerful quality to ‘Cry Wolf’, there is a darker side hidden beneath the hazy smiles.

Juxtaposing the bright melody with melancholic themes, ‘Cry Wolf’ is a dramatic song filled with poignant lyrics – although it sounds lighthearted upon first listen. Using their storytelling skills, the pair share a tale of deceit, pain, turmoil, conflict, angst and rejection wrapped up in a “he said, she said, they said” package. Singer iönä explains that she “…wrote ‘Cry Wolf’ to my brother when he was going through a rough time after a breakup. I wanted him to know that I saw what he was going through, I saw his hurt, I needed him to know that I’ve always known his heart and that he wasn’t alone and never will be.”

Sincere, sentimental and filled with a tender intimacy, Glashus astound audiences with their new single ‘Cry Wolf’.
