Gianfranco GFN – In My Dreams (2023)

For over a decade, guitarist and composer Gianfranco GFN has entertained the masses with his moving melodies. No, that’s not correct; he has both intoxicated and ensnared their senses while entertaining audiences. Tipping his hat at blues, funk, rock, pop and a strong sense of jazz, Switzerland-based Gianfranco GFN and his band bring a sound that is purely his and no one else. We came across Gianfranco earlier this year with his singles ‘Supernatural (It’s The End)’ and ‘Sing The Song’; now we take a listen to his intriguing song ‘In My Dreams’.

Taking a step back into his earlier releases of 2023, ‘In My Dreams’ fits between the collaborative ‘Poesia’ featuring Nina G’s hip-hop stylings, and the pop-influenced ‘Doctor Wind’. Regardless of the boundary-breaking versatility and experimental arrangements, one aspect remains constant in all of Gianfranco GFN’s music – the joy of jazz.

Joined by Vladimir Crabone (vocals), Giorgia Rissone (backing vocals), David Caraccio (bass), Nicolas Pittet (drums), Clauda-Alain Biedermann (keyboard), Lucien Matthey (percussion), Gianfranco GFN’s guitar seamlessly blends into a kaleidoscopic sonic pool. Flits of jazz pour forth from the guitars, drums and keyboard, while the percussion brings up the rear in its funky vibe. While we swirl about in the pool with sweet caresses of comfort, there is a rawness in the swirls adding an edge to ‘In My Dreams’.

You might find yourself in a warm, rich dream; however, a slip of rock clings to Crabone’s vocals. Slightly raw with a gruff exterior, a slick of vulnerability shimmers through the song. I find it interesting how the rough male voice is elegantly backed by Rissone’s lighter female tones – a sophisticated expression of the song’s theme. Gianfranco GFN explains:

“’In My Dreams’ is a song about a man who wants a woman who doesn’t seem to be interested in him. So, he dreams that if he were a star, if he had money and a nice care, women would only have eyes for him. This woman, whom he is in love with, would then be jealous and he would have a chance to date her. This guy dreams of shining and being admired, but his awakening brings him back to his reality… he lives alone, without a job and he has to build a future that escapes him.”

In addition to the single, Gianfranco GFN released an official music video for ‘In My Dreams’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
