Giack Bazz – Funny Days (2024)

Sauntering across the spectrum of sound exploring indie-rock, pop-rock, post-punk, indie-pop and a dash of soul, singer-songwriter Giack Bazz (also known as Fredrico Giacobazzi) has a colourful sonic palette. After writing his first single in 2008, Bazz ignited his passion for music with a strong blaze; however, it was only in 2016 that he reached the masses as a solo artist with his debut album Childhood Dream. Over the past eight years, Bazz has released several singles and albums to critical acclaim with boundary-breaking flair. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Funny Days’.

Hot on the heels of his well-received track ‘La Luna e Spenta’ – the Italian version of ‘The Moon Is Painted’ – Bazz shifts from alternative rock to a lighter brand of indie-rock in ‘Funny Days’. Interestingly, while the bold guitar and pounding drums retain the hit of alternative rock, a hush of soothing clings to the indie-rock-charged single leaning toward something light but profound. Moreover, while ‘Funny Days’ brings a contemporary indie edginess to the melody, a breath of old-school indie-rock lingers embracing both the nostalgic and new.

Along with pounding drums, scorching guitars and a kick of ferocity in the obscure vocals, a harmonic unity exists with a symphonic flow. Yet, as with the trombone in ‘The Moon Is Painted’, an unusual sound pierces the song. Disconnected from the indie-rock flow, a swoop of lo-fi sound shines beneath a slick rock guitar before returning to the indie-rock tone. Even more peculiar is the crisp psychedelic crackling (similar to the sound of a radio trying to find a particular station) lurking between the lo-fi and rock sounds.

The melody is an interesting one hitting a calm mellifluous flow with chinks of obscure elements blinking in the sonic river; however, it is the lyricism that touches one’s heart. With his rich, warm vocals, Giack Bazz navigates a mire of tumultuous emotion and inner angst in ‘Funny Days’. With the lines: “Today I better do something with my life”, ‘Funny Days’ embraces the desire to reach a higher purpose but also the decision to head in a more positive direction.
