gettinga.life ft ColorMind – Starfire (2022)

While unrequited love rarely has a happy ending, there is no harm in dreaming about running away with the person you care about. This is the scene painted in the melancholic vocals and rich synths of ‘Starfire’. Featuring instrumentation from ColorMind, gettinga.life creates a single that you easily listen to as you drive into the sunset.

Tinged with bittersweet feelings and thoughts, the track offers an intimate warmth that bounces off the beats. After studying music on and off over the years, Isaac Saenz, the man behind the music, has been blending experimental tones with pop sensibilities since 2017. With a bachelor’s degree in Music Production, he has helped other artists and used his own skills for his releases.

‘Starfire’ brings a late-night feeling to the soundscape through the lapping waves of the synths. Through the melody, you are filled with the intimate vibes of the track that brings a confessional feeling to the vocals. As the beats enter and get your foot tapping, the synths continue to waver through the upper layers, leading you toward an endless horizon. The music has a unique arrangement that pushes you forward, but also holds you back with a feeling of uncertainty. This perfectly captures the bittersweet touches of unrequited love that fills you with good vibes, only to dampen as you realise they are one-sided. As the single progresses, the melody gains this wonderful night-time drive feeling that makes you think of riding off into the night with someone you care about. ColorMind has done a fantastic job with the instrumentation that flows through your senses while bolstering the vocals.

gettinga.life’s vocals have a slight electronic tinge that blurs the edges, enhancing the late-night feeling of the single. This blurring also creates the feeling that the confession and wish woven into the lyrics are less grounded in reality than you might want. The verses are packed with a soft confessional vibe as he expresses his emotions without any expectation of reciprocation. This moves into a chorus that rises with a bubble of hope that is infused with dreams of what could be. Through all of this, there is a melancholy that settles in your chest, letting you know that the dream of being together forever is something that can never come true.

Using intimate instrumentation provided by ColorMind, gettinga.life hazes into a dream that can never be reality with a melancholic and bittersweet edge in ‘Starfire’. There is an intimate yet expansive feeling to the melody as it reaches out with a late-night feeling. The confessional edge of the vocals across the verses slides into the bittersweet hope of the chorus, for a wonderfully emotive track.
