Geoff Gibbons – Morgantown (2024)
An established figure in the Canadian music scene, singer-songwriter Geoff Gibbons is known for his tender, poetic storytelling set to engaging, heartfelt melodies. A confident performer, his enigmatic charisma has intoxicated audiences for decades as he dissolved the lines of rock, blues and country with Americana flair. While a prominent solo artist, Gibbons began playing in various bands and continues to collaborate with different artists, as well as sharing the stage with acts like David Crosby, Levon Helm and Emmy-Lou Harris. His discography heads back to the 2000 album Love Tattoos, at least according to Spotify, but we only joined the international following in 2022 with ‘Waitin’ on a Train’. Come with us as we delve into his most recent release, ‘Morgantown’.
Following the well-received single ‘Feet out the Window’, Gibbons takes a gallant step into 2024 with ‘Morgantown’. Joined by Jay Buettner (electric guitar), John Ellis (pedal steel), Rob Becker (bass) and Simon Kendall (piano and organ), Gibbons (acoustic/electric guitars and vocals) creates a swirl of sound in which you easily lose yourself.
Finding a balance between organic and synthetic tones there is a union of pedal steel and electronic guitars with the pounding drums, acoustic guitar and interspersed piano. Interestingly, while all elements swarm in a harmonic symphony with soulful soothing, fragility and vulnerability slip through each instrument with a discomforting quality. It is as if you are eager to smile and sing along but tears sting your eyes while your heart drops and your breath escapes you.
Intricate and complex, a clear precision exists in a hypnotic haze of kaleidoscopic twirls; however, the melody is not the only profound aspect of ‘Morgantown’. With poetic lyricism and Gibbons’ haunting yet warm vocals, the blurring rush of music expresses the heartfelt exploration of love, loss and human fragility. Gibbons explains:
“Where dreams often outgrow the confines of familiarity… ‘Morgantown’ is a bittersweet tale of a star-crossed love set against the backdrop of a small town.”
