Genuine Leather – Promises (2023)
The brainchild of US-based singer-songwriter Chris Galis, Genuine Leather bridges the divide between power-pop, indie-rock and synth-pop. Moreover, his music seems to drag people from 2023 back to the sounds of the 80s and 90s while still retaining a contemporary vibe. From his album Losers in 2015 to his EP Donnie & The Smokes in 2022, Genuine Leather has turned heads across the globe with his unique style. This is my introduction to this talented Texan but he has been featured in Unheard Gems, Vibe Towns, iHeart Radio, The Vinyl District, Spill Magazine, and many more. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Promises’.
The first track from his upcoming six-track EP, Genuine Pleasure, ‘Promises’ finds the balance between modern-day and old-school synth-pop. Imagine Tame Impala meeting Tears For Fears and you might have a vague idea of what to expect. Then again, Genuine Leather traipses the decades taking tinges of whatever he thinks makes an awesome song – and, to be honest, I’m perfectly happy with his masterful musicality.
A toe-tapping single, ‘Promises’ wraps jovial, bouncy vibes in a bright bubble-gum pink pop package. Moving from his heavier indie-rock style in Donnie & The Smokes, ‘Promises’ shows an evolution in Genuine Leather’s sound offering a softer, gentler, more soothing tone. Perhaps it is not necessarily an evolution in or honing of his sound but it certainly displays Genuine Leather’s diversity, innovation and versatility as an artist.
Described as a “three-minute dance-pop gem”, ‘Promises’ has a groovy vibe which easily relaxes any listener’s mind, body and soul. From the mellifluous guitar to the swaying synths, bold beats and rich vocals, the new single has an intoxicating charm. Galis shares that he will “always be in pursuit of The Great Song”, my opinion is that ‘Promises’ is just that. If this is anything to go by, I cannot wait for Genuine Pleasure.
