Geena Gangi – Sugar Stained (2022)

Described by Sinusoidal Music as having “eccentrically fresh songs”, singer-songwriter Geena Gangi brings a jovial quirkiness to her melodies. Slathering her tracks with a powerful, bright pop sound, Gangi can be considered one of those happier pop artists; however, the complexity of the melodies lies in the juxtaposition of tragic lyricism and blissful tunes. Along with Sinusoidal Music, Gangi has been praised by Pop Passion Blog, Carte Blanche Music, Music Arena GH, York Calling and Iggy Magazine making her a global sensation. The latest addition to her well-received repertoire is the single ‘Sugar Stained’.

Following her track ‘The Nice Guy’, ‘Sugar Stained’ once again shows her honest, heart-breaking lyricism and upbeat, jovial melodies intricacy. Influenced by artists like Taylor Swift and Lizzy McAlpine, the US-based singer-songwriter brings an electronic pop song with ‘Sugar Stained’. Yet, while there is the traditional pop arrangement to the track, ‘Sugar Stained’ has an eclecticism highlighting her inspiration from Prince. The up-and-down rollercoaster with lapses in sound is obscure, but the quirkiness enhances its intoxicating quality.

As with Prince and David Bowie, the songs are eclectic in the melodies; however, it is the eclecticism that superbly aligns the theme with the tune. Written by Geena Gangi and recorded with Nick Stumpo, ‘Sugar Stained’ is a love song (of sorts). She explains that the song refers to something “being sugar-coated with a sweet outside but bitter middle…” While the track does retain a melancholy of Gangi’s upsetting experience of being cheated on, the full-bodied boldness encourages a sense of empowerment instead of tragedy.
