GAZ – Happy Girl (2022)
Through the slight throwback tones of ‘Happy Girl’, GAZ is hitting us with a lovestruck tale. Taking a modern love story and infusing it with the sounds of a 70s underground London club, the band layers distorted guitars over awesome bass solos. While the single is based on a true story that just had to be told, there is an easy connection that weaves its way through the sound, making it easy for everything to relate to.
Upbeat and wonderfully textured, the passion the band has for what they do can be felt through the vocals and instrumentation. Josep Antoni Lopez (lead vocals, bass), Jordi Perdigo (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Albert Perdigo (drums) have been flying into people’s rock hearts since their debut album in 2018. Formed through a passion for music, the three friends set out on a journey to lift the spirits of listeners through their music and are doing a fantastic job.
‘Happy Girl’ grabs you with the groovy opening and gets your body moving before you know what has hit you. There is a retro vibe to the bassline but this is given a modern rock twist through the lead guitar. The combination of retro and modern rock tones makes the sound rather timeless while injecting a serious burst of fun into the sound. It is impossible to stay still as the melody weaves its way into your senses. As the guitars twirl with their fusion of old and new, the drums roll beneath your feet, making you dance and rock out to the sound. Halfway through the single are some seriously epic guitar solos that make you want to air guitar to them or just close your eyes and soak up their musical power. The upbeat and lively energy of the single shines brightly throughout the single and is an absolute blast to listen to.
While you are forced to move to the music through its infectious vibe, Lopez’s vocals pick up the fusion touch of the melody. With a hit of the 70s, his performance takes you to a colourful dancefloor where you see the main character. There is an unstoppable draw woven into the vocals as you are sent toward the happy girl, like a moth to the flame. Through his performance, he brings a touch of summer to the track with bright sunshine, warmth and happiness flying out over the guitars. All of this covers the catchy lyrics that are extremely easy to sing along to and will get stuck in your head.
GAZ has you moving to the retro, yet modern, tones of ‘Happy Girl’ as they inject some upbeat summer vibes into your soul, while capturing the unstoppable draw you feel toward someone. Both the melody and vocals tap into the sounds of the 70s, before bringing a modern twist. The vocals are infectious and will have you singing along long before the song comes to an end.
