Gary Dranow and The Manic Emotions – Day I Was Born (2023)

Sensational, timeless, captivating, and a band that captures the essence of the blues-rock genre – these are just a few words publications across the globe use to describe Gary Dranow and The Manic Emotions. From Sinusoidal News to Illustrate Magazine, Headbanger News, TJPL News and Iggy Magazine, Dranow and his crew reach audiences and turn heads on an international scale. After excelling in his non-musical business endeavours (in the world of outdoor sports), the veteran musician began using music as a means of coping with the effects of a stroke and bipolar disorder. Music therapy is a great form of treatment but it’s not all serious, it’s fun! Gary Dranow and The Manic Emotions capture this jovial fun in their melodies.

Following their well-received track ‘Mellow Drama’, Gary Dranow and The Manic Emotions release ‘Day I Was Born’. Recorded in only one take, the US-based band demonstrate sophistication, excellence and a truly natural talent for music. Either that or they’re just so in tune with their instruments that one take is all they need, and that leads to the excellence, sophistication and beauty of their sound.

Transporting listeners to the golden days of blues-rock, ‘Day I Was Born’ is a vintage masterpiece that just happened to be created in 2023. A guitar-driven single, ‘Day I Was Born’ showcases Dranow’s jaw-dropping skills as a guitarist. Soaring riffs and effortless blues solos tinged with a classic rock tone effortlessly intoxicate listeners. In an interview with Illustrate Magazine Dranow noted one of his influences as Eric Clapton and he sure lets the inspiration shine in ‘Day I Was Born’ but also adds a slant of his own to the energetic single.

In the same interview with Illustrate Magazine, Dranow explained that he wrote songs “to affect the listener…filled with life lessons”; ‘Day I Was Born’ has that personal narrative and connection with audiences. In a groovy, bluesy, toe-tapping melody, Dranow and The Manic Emotions share a tale of responsibility, expectation, and “not letting your Mama down…”. The thing is, it’s in such a groovy bluesy tune that you might overlook the profoundness of the theme. Yet, the joy and upbeat quality of ‘Day I Was Born’ only enhances the intimate connection made with individuals who also face that responsibility. It’s having a bit of fun but acknowledging the difficult path people need to walk. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
