Garlen Lo – I’ll Try My Best To Get To You (2024)

London via Hong Kong singer-songwriter Garlen Lo is becoming a sort of a regular here at The Other Side Reviews, not necessarily as a part of some sort of favouritism, but simply because he is continuing to come up with a series of singles that fit so nicely into that bedroom pop sub-genre. Still, like anywhere else, it is a question whether an artist is creating something good and listenable, or something that will get into one of your ears and quickly exit through the other. The thing with Mr Lo and his singles is that you hear them and they somehow get stuck between your ears and don’t want to leave, and yes, that is a good thing.

Add to that the fact that Lo continues to add his good sense of humour to his lyrics, something that is a bit concealed here, but comes through nonetheless. That concealment lies in the fact that, as Lo describes it himself, this song is “a happy song about depression” and could be a touchy subject for quite a few listeners; but Lo skates through it with charm and ease, and the good melody (at which Lo is getting better and better) certainly helps.

That prevailing sense of humour is quite obvious in the way Lo describes the beginning of his musical career: “Aged 8 he was raised by a wine-guzzling auntie who played country music at max volume. One Christmas, he got a guitar and took naturally to writing drunken singalongs with twee wordplay.”

It seems that the guitar he picked up at that early age served Lo well so far, as did the ‘twee wordplay’ with his songwriting and performances growing both in confidence and quality. Let’s see what comes up next, like a debut album, for example.
