Garland Kelley – A Mind Of Your Own (2023)
Lying somewhere between The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters, singer-songwriter Garland Kelley nods to the sounds of yesteryear. His love for classic rock is elegantly wrapped in a modern-day rock package making it both retro and contemporary. While Kelley only has one original single to date (at least that’s what we found on Spotify), he is a veteran performer. With a reputation for engaging shows, Garland Kelley is an established act in the Nashville live music scene; however, he is taking his talent to another level with new material. Come with us as we delve into his debut single ‘A Mind Of Your Own’.
Described as a “—pure lush treat” (Rock Era Magazine) and “…delivers an alternative rock of great quality…” (Roadie Metal), Garland Kelley is captivating listeners across the globe with his unique sound. As Roadie Metal mentioned, ‘A Mind Of Your Own’ is “…great quality…”, but we’re taking it one step further by saying it’s superb quality. Combining powerful guitars and pounding drums in a 90s alternative rock style, this is a song with a nostalgic rock flair. The thing is, while a strong pull is felt (or rather heard) to the styles of Foo Fighters, Kelley brings an intriguing obscurity to the single. This is specifically heard in the brief movement from heavy rock to light-hearted folksy tones before a full thrust to an awesome classic rock guitar solo.
Along with the toe-tapping and body-swaying melody, Garland Kelley connects with audiences on an emotional and personal level. You become lost in the music with a floating whimsy, but the lyricism is as profound and shows much intimacy. Aiming to push boundaries with a “no-frills yet exciting and punchy vibe”, the song explores “existential issues including mortality, individualism, mental health and philosophy.” His distinctive vocals ooze the passion behind the thought-provoking themes wrapping you in a comfortable sonic blanket.
