Gallowayyys – Ollie Off A Mxlly (2022)

Influenced by the likes of Prince, Bjork, Jimi Hendrix and Basquiat, singer-songwriter and producer Gallowayyys bring a unique slant to the indie-pop world. Beginning his music project as an undergraduate at the University of North Texas, Gallowayys (also known as Blake Alexander) developed an eclectic and visual musical style. His interest in music overcame recording demos in the dorms as he actively pursued professional relationships within the music industry; thus, the world of music opened up to him. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Ollie Off A Mxlly’.

An original, self-produced track, ‘Ollie Off A Mxlly’ is the third of 10 releases Gallowayyys has scheduled for release during 2022 and 2023. Following the single ‘Acid In My Car’, ‘Ollie Off A Mxlly’ features layered melodies, dynamic textures and oozes pure passion. Similar to ‘Acid In My Car’, there is a synth-driven ambience within a cinematic soundscape; however, it is far more laidback and soothing than the previous release. Blending soft dream-pop beats with a hip-hop vocal execution, the single appears to add attitude to an almost hazy tune. What I find particularly interesting is the interspersed percussion adding an earthy feel to this honest single.

While I can easily listen to the obscure melody all day long, Gallowayyys showcases true depth with the lyrical theme. He explains that ‘Ollie Off A Mxlly’ is “the first in a series of songs unpacking the experiences that shaped my world view…it is centred on the anxieties, regrets and mania a person experiences when coping through a drawn-out breakup” – it is this human element that makes Gallowayyys connect with audiences.

I’m unsure how to describe ‘Ollie Off A Mxlly’, although I have tried my best. The fact of the matter is that to truly experience the sensational obscurity of Gallowayyys you just need to listen to the song.
