Galaxy Thief – Second Messing (2023)

From their well-received 2021 single ‘Shaken’ (a collaboration with Amber T) to the 2023 release ‘Years’, UK-based foursome Galaxy Thief has been on our radar and we follow them with an intrigued fascination. Pre-Covid, the lads impressed audiences across the UK with their vibrant performances at notable music venues and festivals, including Bestival and Music In The City. In 2018, their sophomore single ‘Money!’ featured on ITV’s This Morning and since then Galaxy Thief has featured on numerous radio stations reaching far beyond their UK borders. Moving onto post-Covid years, the band prove they are more than a one-trick pony presenting a more mature, sophisticated elegance to their music. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Second Messing’.

The second song in a series of five singles, ‘Second Messing’ was recorded with producer Michael Smith at Woodworm Studios. As with the previous single ‘Years’, ‘Second Messing’ has an indie-rock flavour; however, a more pop-rock/pop-punk leaning fills our ears with this song. With a nostalgic flair back to the sounds of the 90s, we can easily place ‘Second Messing’ alongside Good Charlotte, Weezer and Simple Plan. Bold, rich guitars meet pounding drums to harmonically bring a vibrant melody to the fore. Yet, while the high-octane instrumentation can get you twirling about singing along, it is Rhys Messenger’s gruff vocals that really tie things up. No offence to George Bowerman (lead guitar), Jake Trim (bass) or Ben Watton (drums) of course; they are all brilliant musicians.

In an interview with Indie Top 39, Galaxy Thief noted they “…try not to take ourselves too seriously but it also helps to share life experiences through our music and maybe this is the appeal to our listeners…” – the lads capture this in ‘Second Messing’. Penned as a soundtrack to the void between being in a relationship and just before the romance actually becomes a relationship, Galaxy Thief stem frustration and confusion in their high-powered single. George Bowerman explains: “where most songs are about being either in love or out of it, ‘Second Messing’ fills that no man’s land between being interested enough but still unsure whether you want to commit.”
