Gabriel’s Dawn – I Don’t Believe (In the Summer of Love) (2021)

In an effort to make guitar pop wonderful again, Gabriel’s Dawn has released their single ‘I Don’t Believe (In the Summer of Love)’. A new band, they bring their shared love of melodic pop and classic songwriting to your ears through the tones of this single. If you are in the mood for a single that gets you moving to guitars while rocking out to a blast of power pop, this is the one for you.

Gudg (vocals), Fran (bass), Leon (guitar) and Stu (keys) have never been in the studio at the same time, but you would never guess that from the sound of their music. From the jangling guitars to the infectious vocals, they bring smooth arrangements to your ears with unbelievable ease.

‘I Don’t Believe (In the Summer of Love)’ jangles into your ears with a really engaging guitar line. There is a touch of retro feelings and nostalgia woven into the melody. The pulsing tones of the instrumentation have your head bopping then swaying to the beat. It is a wonderful throwback melody that has you thinking of old-school power-pop and the sun streaming over the beach. It is a very light melody that is a bit at odds with the lyrics and rather sombre message of the track.

Gudg’s vocals continue the retro vibes of the melody but also bring a thread of modernity. Her voice is all summer sun and days spent having fun at the beach. This has you riding a rather mellow vibe that is darkened by the lyrics tell a sad and dark tale. There is a hit of heartache, emptiness and pain in the lyrics that wavers under the higher levels of the vocal performance. The contrasts in the track have been perfectly handled showcasing the musical prowess of the band.

Gabriel’s Dawn contrasts bright jangling melodics and a tale of sadness in the lyrics of ‘I Don’t Believe (In the Summer of Love)’. The vibrant and summery feeling of the melody will have you bopping and swaying to the beat. While the vocals carry some of the retro summer vibes, they tell a sadder tale of heartache and emptiness.
