Future Utopia – Don’t Try This At Home (2025)
Known for his eclectic musical concoctions and confident stage presence, producer and singer-songwriter Fraser T. Smith reaches our ears as the intriguing Future Utopia. A Grammy award-winning producer, he has worked with the likes of Gorillaz, Sam Smith, and Adele; however, this is our introduction to Smith as a musician even though we’re a bit late to the musical party. Turning heads internationally with his melodies and engaging live performances, Future Utopia reaches listeners on a cross-continental level winning hearts with every pulsating note. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Don’t Try This At Home’.
Following his well-received 2024 album Django’s High – the first album where we hear Smith sing – ‘Don’t Try This At Home’ is a toe-tapping, body-shaking, head-spinning twirl of electronic pop. Wait, belay that; ‘Don’t Try This At Home’ is far more than a rush of electronic bold beats pulsating in rhythmic harmony. No, it is a kaleidoscopic mish-mash of electropop, funk, indie-pop, and even some psychedelic rock peaking from the background.
A collaboration with Molly and Sweetstix, ‘Don’t Try This At Home’ has been self-defined as “psych disco”. Breathing life into nostalgic whispers of old-school disco, Future Utopia drags us back to the 1980s with its coloured dance floor and mirror-ball; however, ‘Don’t Try This At Home’ is also perfect for contemporary electropop festivals and clubs with its modern-day edginess. Familiar in the most tender way, but a refreshing burst of newness.
As hushed vocals blend with disco power, ‘Don’t Try This At Home’ can be calming and electric – it all depends on your vibe at the moment. Not necessarily sincere, but packed with warm sonic embraces, Future Utopia wriggles into our ears with a festival-worthy tune. I cannot wait for more from this talented singer, songwriter, DJ and producer.
In addition to the single, Future Utopia released an official music video for ‘Don’t Try This At Home’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
