Future Fears – Obvious (2020)

Founded in 2015, Futures Fears is a dynamic alt-pop trio from Dublin, Ireland. Since their inception, the group has grown from strength to strength honing their unique sound. The group released their debut single in 2016 and, to date, have received positive covering on a national scale featuring in Echo, Handpicked Gigs and Ultrasounds Show (Liffy Sound FM).

With their focus on extensive gigging, Future Fears have built a strong, loyal following; however, the Covid-19 pandemic put live performances in the backseat. Refusing to allow quarantine and isolation to ruin their music journey, David Duggan (vocals and bass), Juan Manuel Flores (guitar) and Susan Ward (keys/synths) are pursuing artistic endeavours regardless of lockdown. The latest collaboration with renowned producer Ray Traynor is their single ‘Obvious’.

.

Touching on the consequences of toxic relationships, ‘Obvious’ is the tale of a female protagonist putting on a brave face while suppressing her inner turmoil. Using his distinctive vocals, Duggan takes one through a tale of pain, desperation and confusion. Combining the melodic rock vocals with an infusion of rap near the middle of the tune, Future Fears show their versatility to seamlessly meld different genres.

Despite the seriousness of the narrative, the harmonic combination of synths, bass and guitar make ‘Obvious’ a smooth, flowing single. Thing is, while the melody is smooth and light, it incites a distressing poignancy. It’s like watching a Hallmark movie about someone struggling in an abusive relationship hoping that the characters will work things out, even though you know the challenges they face are almost impossible to handle – that’s ‘Obvious’.
