Future.exboyfriend – Fool (2021)
People argue a lot, but there are times when you know that you are in the wrong. The moment in an argument when you realise that you have been wrong the whole time has been taken by Future.exboyfriend and turned into his single ‘Fool’. Through the music, he is able to capture that second of realisation and the emotions that follow.
This moment of realisation comes from Tyler Harris, the man behind the ex-boyfriend. He started this musical project in early 2020 and has released two singles with Maison Kitsuné. Now, he is unleashing a dreamy argument into the world while showcasing his musical abilities through the DIY production.
‘Fool’ hits you with some toe-tapping beats in the opening that turn into a more melodic flow. The tapping beats remain in the lower levels but are washed by a dreamy haze. The dreamy upper layer of the melody perfectly complements the vocals while adding a reflective vibe to the song. The contrast between the beats and the hazy tones is wonderful as it captures the feeling of an argument and the moment of knowing you are actually wrong. The disconnect that this moment can cause comes through in the upper layers and the dropping of the beats as the single continues.
When the vocals come in, they are as dreamy as the top layer of the melody. While a gentle mist, they are emotive and have you floating on their pastel tones. They effortlessly describe the heat of the moment in an argument and the second you feel like a fool for arguing that you are right when you aren’t. Through the lyrics and vocals, Harris is able to bring the chagrin and embarrassment of these moments to life while letting you have a great time to the single.
Future.exboyfriend uses dreamy tones and toe-tapping beats to capture the moment of realising you are wrong in an argument in ‘Fool’. With the contrasting layers of the melody, he creates a sonic representation of the argument. The vocals are dreamy and have you floating through the emotions these moments bring.
