Fringe Frontier – Livin’ Not To Lose (2024)
With a dab of punk, a dash of post-punk, a flutter of indie-rock and a splash of classic rock, Fringe Frontier are sonic alchemists concocting their unique brand of music. Shining with its kaleidoscopic sheen, the group are known for Americana storytelling “…fuelled by punchy guitar hooks…” For me, this is my introduction to Fringe Frontier, and possibly many others considering their discography is scanty. With only four tracks over the past year, the US-based band may be a newbie; however, the maturity of their songs makes Fringe Frontier a group not to be ignored. The latest addition to their repertoire is the single ‘Livin’ Not To Lose’.
Following the well-received songs ‘18’ and ‘Wake Me Up’, ‘Livin’ Not To Lose’ is a precursor to Fringe Frontier’s upcoming album Wirehouse. As compared to ‘18’, ‘Livin’ Not To Lose’ adopts a slightly heavier rock sound with pounding drums, a bold bass and searing guitars. Interestingly, while each instrument comes together in harmonic union, there is a distinctive distortion to the single. Each element punches into the melody with forceful abruptness. Yet, at the same time, there is an organised soothing interwoven in the individual chaos. For me, it is this duality of dark and light, confidence and vulnerability, collision and cohesion that enhances Fringe Frontier’s innovative nature.
I mention that Fringe Frontier’s songs show a degree of maturity, but therein lies more duality. Sophisticated and sharp, but with a raw grunge-esque grittiness and complexity clinging to its edges. Moreover, the nostalgic whiff of vintage indie-rock floods through the track as Fringe Frontier drag listeners back to the 90s.
Melodically, ‘Livin’ Not To Lose’ is an intriguing affront of rock music. Yet, as intricate as that is, it is the lyrical poetry and theme that ups its ante. Fragile and gruff, rawness exists; however, amidst the tragedy is a shining light oozing empowerment and resilience as the band sings “…I wanna build a new road/ free of this heavy load/ Yeah I been livin’ not to lose”.
Sincere and honest, introspective and reflective, ‘Livin’ Not To Lose’ is an enchanting release perfect as the heartening theme tune of new beginnings.
